Random Web 2.0

Ever since Web 2.0 was introduced to me by David Jakes during my summer technology class, I have been trying to keep a handle on the many online applications. I’m finding that this is more and more impossible as new ones are created every day! While the tie-in between iPod Classics and Web 2.0 applications isn’t always clear (many can be changed into videos for upload), this is an exciting time to be on the internet. I will keep track of any educationally useful applications on this page.

In the mean time many educators simply want to know more about how Web 2.0 basics like blogging, social networking, RSS, and wikis work. The best explanation of these online applications rests in the entertaining “hands” of Common Craft’s: In Plain English. Will they tell you how to set up a blog or wiki? No, but they’ll give you the gist of how they work and you’ll finally be able to talk with the technophiles in your school!

In addition to these videos are online resources from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).  I’ve been expanding my involvement with this group ever since I joined in July 2007 (especially the Special Interest Group: Handhelds).  To learn more about Web 2.0 and You, read the sample article from Lynne Schrum and Gwen Solomon.  Read the last four years of Web 2.0 articles from ISTE’s Learning & Leading with Technology. (Remember: Web 2.0 is relatively new; term is from 2003 or 2004)  The most practical, however, is Atomic Learning’s Web 2.0 movies.  They breakdown the basic spectrum on how it works, but you’ll need a password.  Chances are someone in your school or your technology department can hook you up with this!
