Think you need Microsoft Office? Think again. Web 2.0 to the rescue in the form of online applications covering every one of your needs. If you’re not already familiar with Google’s forage into the online application business, meet Zoho and ThinkFree. These free products still don’t have the power Microsoft Office products offer, but that’s taken years of refining. However, they are quite similar and most are compatible with Office products. The best option, in my humble opinion, is that you can access them anywhere you have an internet connection! New features are coming online all the time, such as iZoho is for the iPhone.
Responses to these free applications prompted Cisco to create WebEx and Microsoft to release Office Live Workspace (OLW). Both of these actually cost something, but you’ll have the power and support of the big companies and complete compatibility for your online collaboration efforts. Either way, this is yet another sign that Web 2.0 is changing how we work with software.
My prediction? The on demand lifestyle of Americans will not stop here. Continued efforts and creative minds will be working to striving to make everything online and available whenever you want it. Watch out software creators, online applications may change the world!
